Insulation is the least glamorous upgrade and usually the most valuable. It is also the gateway measure: a home that leaks heat will not pass the heat pump technical assessment, so insulation is frequently the step that unlocks the far larger heat pump grant later. Grant amounts differ by measure and by property type, so treat the figures on seai.ie as the source of truth.
What it covers
- Attic insulation — usually the cheapest measure with the fastest payback
- Cavity wall insulation, where your walls have a suitable cavity
- External wall insulation ('external wall wrap') — the most expensive and most effective
- Internal wall (dry lining) insulation, where external work is not possible
Who qualifies
- Your home was built and occupied before 2021 (before 2006 for some measures)
- Work is carried out by an SEAI-registered contractor
- A BER assessment is completed after the work
