A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel, which is why it can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity it uses. It is the single largest grant SEAI offers, and in 2026 it rose to up to €12,500 — close to double the previous maximum. It is also the measure with the strictest pre-conditions, because a heat pump only performs in a home that holds its heat.
What it covers
- Air-to-water heat pumps (the most common choice in Irish homes)
- Ground-source and exhaust-air systems
- The required technical assessment of your home before installation
Who qualifies
- Your home was built and occupied before 2021
- You are replacing a fossil-fuel or electric heating system
- Your home passes a heat-pump technical assessment — this is the step most homes fail first time
- Work is carried out by an SEAI-registered installer
