GPs in Ireland set their own fees, so there is no single national price. A standard visit for an adult without a medical card typically costs between €50 and €70, and city practices tend to sit at the upper end. Ask the receptionist when you book: practices will always tell you the fee.
Many people pay nothing. A medical card covers GP visits along with prescriptions and hospital care, and is means-tested. A GP visit card covers GP visits only. Children under 8 and people aged 70 and over can get a GP visit card regardless of income, and income limits for everyone else are set by the HSE.
Some things cost extra even with a regular GP. Procedures such as removing a mole, fitting a contraceptive implant or doing a minor surgery are usually charged separately, as are reports and forms for insurance, employers or driving licences.
Out-of-hours GP services (the GP co-ops that cover nights and weekends) also charge for visits unless you have a medical card or GP visit card, and their fee can be higher than a daytime visit.
If you have private health insurance, check your plan: many refund part of each GP visit after an excess. Unreimbursed GP fees can also count towards tax relief on medical expenses at 20%.
