About
Church Island, a historical landmark in Magherafelt, Co. Derry, is a focal point within the Lough Beg National Nature Reserve. This 300-acre habitat includes wet grassland that floods annually and has not been agriculturally improved. Migrating birds use the reserve for rest and feeding in spring and autumn, while breeding waders are present in early summer. The reserve supports rare plants and wildfowl in winter. Church Island itself, formerly Inish Toide, features an eighteenth-century spire, a ruined medieval church, and an old graveyard, having been the site of a pre-Viking monastery.
